Fred Thorne, the great-grandfather of Terry Thorne, was a member of the SFI. Fred Thorne was a manager of the Squamish Valley Hops Company and a prominent agriculturalist in the area.
The SFI, now the BFI, was founded in 1925 to educate people about agriculture and host annual exhibits. The SFI is now overseen by the Brackendale Farmers Institute (BFI).
