Bracken, John

John Bracken was born in England. He came to Squamish in 1905 with his two sons, Richard and Lance. He was a remittance man.

In Squamish he built an "everything" store and a post office. He was the first postmaster in Brackendale.

He built the Bracken Arms, a hotel with a store and a post office prior to 1908. It was located on the East side of Government Road, south of the present Brackendale store. He used to fine people 25 cents for learning back and resting a chair on its two back legs.

In Spring 1912, the Bracken Arms Hotel burned down when a patron in an upstairs room overturned a coal lamp. The chimney was all that ws left standing.

Brohm, William

William was born in Germany. He moved near Cheakamus around 1894. He brought his daughter from Germany and she would later marry Johnny Smedley.

He built the Mashiter house around 1902.

Edwards, Jim

Jim was born to William and Mary (nee Tompkins) Edwards.

He arrived in Squamish in 1894 on the Saturna. He brought lumber up for Henry Judd's new home. Judd was about to marry Jim's sister, Barbara Anne.

Harry Judd married Barbara Anne Edwards in Vancouver on December 26, 1894. Later in 1904, Jim married Rilla Judd (Harry's sister). This was the first white marriage in the Squamish Valley and took at the bride's home. The bridesmaid was Martha Wright (daughter of school teacher John Wright). The best man was Wilby Judd (Rilla's brother). They had 3 daughters, in order of age: Ethel, Edith, and Nina (changed her name to Merna when she was about 30).

Jim's brother, Jack, came to Squamish in 1908 with his wife. They had come from Manitionlin Island, Ontario. His wife's maiden name was Elizabeth Hawkins.

Webster, Edith

Edith was born to Henry and Barbara Anne (nee Edwards) Judd. She was married to Geroge Webster. he had come to the Judd's house to find work. He and 3 other young men made an excellent Barbershop Quartet. George was Olive Judd's husband's uncle.

They had 4 daughters: Joyce (Mrs Smith) in 1926, Elaine in 1928, Judy (Mrs Silva) in 1930, and Jnet (Mrs Odenheimer) in 1932. Elaine died in 1949.

Herndl, Myrtle

Born to Henry and Barbara Anne (nee Edwards) Judd.

Myrtle married Mr Hendl. Their son Wilfred was born around 1928.

She lived at Edith Lake.

Mills, Hugh Henry

Hugh came to Squamish in 1891 to build barns for George Magee. He also built the Newport Hotel and several other houses.

He married Catherine (Kate) Rae in 1912 after her husband died. He built a house on the 1984 site of Norm Halvorson's land.

He died at age 85 on November 23, 1951.

The Newport Hotel burned down in 1956. It would later be replaced by the current Chieftain Hotel.

Rae, Lawrence Johnson

Lawrence Johnson was born in Squamish to Kate and Allen Rae. He married Violet Jane Smith on September 19, 1921. Violet died on July 28, 1924. Lawrence died in Quesnel at age 61.

Reade, Compton

Compton graduated from Oxford. He joined the crew of an English sailing ship and deserted the ship.

He came to Squamish around 1892. He married and lived on pre-emption in Upper Squamish. He took part in the Klondike Gold Rush around 1897.

Armstrong, Herbert (Herb)

Herbert Armstrong married Minnie Rae in 1912. Minnie was born to Allen and Kate Rae on January 17, 1888 in Balmorl, Manitoba. She came to Squamish with her parents in 1889. She worked as a practical nurse for Doctor N.V. Paul.

Herb and D. McCallum owned and operated a store in Squamish. He was also a part owner of the post office which used to be located where the Seven Seas Restaurant later stood.

Minnie and Herb had 6 children: Mabel (Mrs Keith), Gertrude (Mrs Wilson), Margareta (Mrs McLeod), Bob, Jim, and Les. They lived on the corner right of the Spiral Trailer Court in an area known as "Armstrong's Corner".

Herbert Armstrong fell off a roof and died in 1925. Minnie continued to live at "Armstrong's Corner" in the area across from Mamquam School on Government Road. In 1953, she built an "Armstrong Barn".

Minnie died at age 78 on January 5, 1966.

Bennett, W.A.C.

W.A.C. Bennett is the longest-serving premier in BC history. Born in New Brunswick in 1900, William Andrew Cecil Bennett began his BC career as a successful hardware merchant in Kelowna. First active in the provincial Conservative Party, he joined the Social Credit Party in 1951, and became its leader after a surprise election victory in 1952. During his 20 year term as premier, the province saw rapid economic growth and the ambitious expansion of highways, hydro dams, railways, ferry service and post-secondary institutions, SFU among them. After winning re-election 6 times in campaigns against the "godless socialists" of the CCF-NDP (his term), Bennett resigned his leadership a year after his party was defeated by the NDP in 1972. His son Bill Bennett assumed the leadership, and later become premier himself. Known as "Wacky" to his political foes, W.A. C. Bennett died February 6, 1979 in Kelowna.

Buckley, Brian

Brian Buckley was born in Vancouver to Frank and Doris Buckley. His eldest brother, David Franklin, died in Squamish on August 30, 1932. His other brother is Kenneth Allen Buckley.
